Welcome to the website of the Ramblers’ local area.

The Ramblers is a charity whose core work is to safeguard the places people want to go walking and encourage them to do so — from gentle strolls to challenging hikes, whether in towns or countryside.

We have over 107,000 members across 59 Areas and 500 Groups in England, Scotland and Wales, and the Ramblers arranges over 45,000 organised led walks annually across Britain. This Area is made up of seven geographically based local groups covering Rutland and different parts of Leicestershire. We also have one group targeted at people in their 20s and 30s (see links).

Our own groups put on approaching 1000 walks each year some locally and some further afield, and there are walks for all ages and levels of fitness. There is a mix of weekend walks, midweek evening walks and some daytime walks including Walking for Health programmes. The Area co-ordinates their activities and provides the link between them and the national organisation and campaigns on behalf of the members as a whole and indeed all those in the country who like to walk for whatever reason.

We keep an eye on footpath problems and report any to the County Council and assist the council in the devising and promotion of walks in the area.

Members of the Area committee serve on numerous other bodies, promoting the cause of the walking community. These include the National Forest Access & Recreation Group, the Leicestershire Parks, Open Spaces and Countryside Group, the Leicestershire Local Access Forum, the Leicester City Local Access Forum, the Leicestershire Together, Natural & Historic Environment Partnership, the Charnwood Forest Regional Park Steering Group and the Landscape Partnership Board. It is this campaigning and reporting role that earns us our charity status.

Going along on a few group walks is a great way to get to know a local Ramblers group and see if it’s right for you before joining. You can browse the Ramblers website Group Walks Finder to see who is organising walks all over the country and how to meet up. You can find out more about the local Areas and Groups on the Ramblers’ website. For information on being a member visit  www.ramblers.org.uk/membership and to join www.ramblers.org.uk/join

When you decide to join, you’ll be given a selection of groups to choose from based on your postcode but you can opt for another group if you prefer. Choosing a group doesn’t stop you from walking with other groups nearby or further afield and you can change your group at any time.
